After-break training...

First, I hope the holiday break is treating everyone well thus far! It was good seeing a number of you out for the 5 v. 5 soccer tournament today. Keep taking any opportunity to simply play! And have fun doing it.

Regarding training (skill work AND conditioning) for after our break, please stay tuned for a SPECIFIC announcement on this site regarding the times and places. Coach Malefyt is checking on the exact availability of the middle school upper balcony for January on, so nothing is official at this point.

Tentatively plan on the following weekly schedule though:

**Mondays and Wednesdays: conditioning at the middle school from 3 to 4 PM (for anyone interested, no matter the number of players)

**Tuesdays and Thursdays: small group skill work at the middle school from 3 to 4 PM (for sign-ups only)

**Fridays = off

More later!

Take care, everyone.

THE LAST Coach's Corner...

...after a season-ending 2-0 loss to Zeeland East. Girls, you have NOTHING to hang your heads about after the loss and the conclusion of the season. Please always keep in mind that this was the most SUCCESSFUL JV girls soccer season at Hamilton EVER. And you all are directly responsible for it. I'm not even talking simply wins and losses here (overall 7-9-2 record); i'm talking about the overall character you girls displayed all season. It was a thing of beauty to a coach, and you should all be proud of your efforts.

Now, the season is over, and it's TIME TO START IMPROVING FOR NEXT SEASON! I hope you take to heart the comments you received on your evaluations. They were all made in an attempt to make you all better players and athletes in general.

Good luck! Let me know if you need anything AT ALL! I'm always here for you girls.

BLOG...

Girls, thank you for being patient with the blog business this season. Please remember, this was the first year i've had it, and it was meant to increase the level of communication and offer the opportunity for you to play a role in team building. I hope you found some use in it in the end! Your comments and quotations were great for ME to see all season long.

Liz Vandenbil's QUOTATION and comment...

“No-one gets an iron-clad guarantee of success. Certainly, factors like opportunity, luck and timing are important. But the backbone of success is usually found in old-fashioned, basic concepts like hard work, determination, good planning and perseverance.”

~Mia Hamm

and I have a comment on it:

"Ladies, we know that anything can happen in a soccer game at any time. Going into a game anyone can win, no matter what the outcome is expected to be. We need to go out there and give it our all, keep those concepts of hard work, determination, planning, and perserverance, and if we do that then it doesn't matter what the outcome is. If we keep these in mind and actually do them then we went out and gave it our all and at the end of the day that's all we can do. There're some factors that can come into any game that we can't control. We've had a great season ladies! Let's finish strong and leave it all on the field Wednesday!"

~Liz

Girls, please respond to these wise words by Wednesday at 730 AM.

Rae's Quotation...

"As a futboler you always want to test yourself against the best so try hard and never give up, run alot in games, you won`t die. Maybe sore but you wont die."
-David Beckham

Girls, please respond to these "wise" words no later than Wednesday at 730 AM.

Coach's Corner...

...after another big loss to Holland Christian. I'm actually very glad that Brittany posted her quotation when she did, because she basically stole the words from my mouth; that is, we HAVE to believe that ANYTHING can happen in a given game of soccer...even against the "big dogs". But, you've got to go out there and DO something about it. Today, we didn't have nearly enough girls "do something about it". Let's regroup and look forward to our last game together on Wednesday...and end with an effort we can be proud of!

Brittany's Quotation...

“It's why we play the game. Anything is possible and anything can happen if you put your mind to it."
-Casey Korkus

Girls, please respond to these wise words by this Wednesday at 730 AM.

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...a couple days after the impressive 2-1 vs. Wayland. Girls, simply said: A job well done. I truly believe that was our best performance of the season...for a few key reasons: 1.) being down 1-0 at halftime and pulling out the comeback victory shows heart and mental toughness. 2.) overachieving against a "more talented" team overall points to a key characteristic of a GOOD team. 3.) we made the most of scoring chances and played a SMART game defensively, especially in the second half playing with the lead. GREAT JOB, ladies! Now, on to a rematch with H.C. VISUALIZE SUCCESS and BELIEVE IT!

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Jessica's COMMITMENT Quotation...

"Commitment:

It means sacrificing your body for the ball.

Doing your best and always trying to improve.

Never giving up and not dwelling in the past.

It's what every player needs."
-Jessica Kimber

Girls, please comment on these words by Monday at 730 AM.

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Liz VandeWege's SACRIFICE quotation...

Its all about heart. If you're not willing to do it, and you're willing to sacrifice your body and put your body out there and do whatever the team needs, thats what it is.
~Corey Jackson

Girls, please respond to these words with your own interpretation by Monday at 730 A.M.

JV Game on MONDAY, MAY 18...

...is AT Holland Christian at 4 P.M. with the varsity game to follow. The bus will leave right after school.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a tough 3-2 loss to Zeeland West. Girls, we've got to be more mentally tough, especially at this time of the season...no excuses. Some of us let the opponents and referees get into our heads; some of us feel asleep at times with our marks. What does that lead to? A 3-2 loss (after 1-0 and 2-1 leads at that). Ok, enough with the negatives. There were some great performances out there today...some good possession at times which led to great goals...solid one-on-one defense for the most part, etc. Now, let's bounce back and PERFORM vs. Wayland on Friday!

Kalina's TEAM quotation

Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.
-Henry Ford (Michigander and founder of Ford Motor Company)

Girls, please respond to this quotation with your own interpretations and thoughts by Wednesday at 730 AM.

Brandi's TEAM quotation

“A champion is someone who does not settle for that day's practice, that day's competition, that day's performance. They are always striving to be better. They don't live in the past.”
-Briana Scurry (former U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper and World Cup winner)

Girls, respond to this quotation with your own interpretations and thoughts by Wednesday at 730 AM.

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...the day after a humbling 5-0 defeat by Holland Christian. Girls, continue to VISUALIZE success....but in the future, BELIEVE what you're seeing and PRACTICE it often. I don't think we were all truly confident last night with the idea that we COULD and WOULD beat H.C., and it showed in our sub-par performance. It's not enough to simply visualize...we have to complete the equation and go out and compete! Remember this all for the next games!

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

Bowling...

Please remember to have the permission slip read, signed (by a parent) and delivered to me ASAP. Lookin' forward to it!

Morgan's VISUALIZATION quotation...

Visualize your responsibilities and your responsibilities will be successful.
-Morgan Stillson

Girls, please respond to Morgan's thoughts no later than this Friday at 730 AM.

Congrats...

...to Monica for her stellar physical and mental performance today at practice. She will be the honorary captain for the H.C. game tomorrow (wed.). And in a close second place, Morgan deserves recognition for her stepped-up play. Keep it up, girls!

I forgot to mention this today at practice too, girls. PLEASE take care of your bodies tonight and tomorrow on your day off in preparation for the big game. That means do as much as you can to keep a normal sleeping, eating, and drinking routine. Sleeping in too long and laying around all day will lead to a lazy, groggy performance. PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR SUCCESS AND VISUALIZE IT!

Beat H.C.

Monday, May 4, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a record-setting 7-0 win vs. Rogers today. First, great job, girls, in setting the official bar for success at the JV girls soccer level. You are all now officially a part of first winning JV program in Hamilton's short girls soccer history. And with a great offensive effort today, the sky's the limit for the rest of the season. Be aware though that the road gets much tougher in the near future, beginning with a very good Holland Christian squad this Wednesday. So, celebrate the effort today but get ready to work even harder from here on out!

Friday, May 1, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a another step in the right direction: a 2-1 win vs. Kellogsville. Girls, this was one of the better efforts of the season...a job well done. The POSSESSION and COMPOSURE displayed today was impressive...and you should be proud. It's Rogers on Monday now!

Apology...

...for Emily. A rude, ignorant comment from the coach, without knowing details, needs to be addressed....again. Sorry, Em....I figured it was all in fun...the comment on the announcements, that is. I apologize...stupid me....and I felt like an idiot for the next few hours...put a damper on the good win. Forgive me...and enjoy the weekend.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a bounce-back 2-0 win vs. Wyoming Park. Girls, we took a step in the right direction today. BUT, like I mentioned, we HAVE to start demanding more of ourselves at this point in the season and not "settling" for mediocrity. Let's be honest: a 2-0 win vs. that team today is "mediocrity". We need to BUILD on this win for Friday and keep demanding our TRUE BEST!

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Hayley's MENTAL TOUGHNESS Quotation

"The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It's your mind you have to convince."
-Vince Lambardi

Girls, please respond to this quotation no later than Friday morning at 730 A.M.

Monday, April 27, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a 4-0 loss to a tough Mona Shores team. Girls, I think if we played Allegan with the same overall energy that we did today, we win that game. Today, though, our effort wasn't good enough to beat a very strong Mona Shores squad. Nonetheless, playing good teams like Shores is only going to make us stronger since they play similar to how I'd like us to play. On to Wyo. Park on Wednesday! Remember, teams are measured by how they respond to "the down times".

+/- ratings for this past week...

New Photos...

...posted today. Check them out! Thanks again, Rae and fam. Oh, and the pink is only there for breast cancer awareness...:)

Chelsea's COMMUNICATION Quotation...

"Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people."
-Jim Rohn

...and Chelsea's personal comment on these words:

This quote applies to our team in so many ways. When we communicate effectively in practice, we don't have to put on a show of tring to talk during games, it's just what comes naturally. When we communicate outside of practice, we learn what works, what makes other teammates respond and how efficiently we can come together. Communication is as simple as smiling at your team members in the hallways, or waving if you see them out and about. That's just something that's common courtesy and we should all practice it.

Everyone should reply to this post no later than Monday morning at 730 AM.

Friday, April 24, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a disappointing 0-0 tie vs. Allegan. Girls, it's best we forget about today's result ASAP. Actually, let's not forget EVERYTHING: we need to keep avoiding bad habits (kick ball, jumping in, lazy effort on 50/50's, not finishing golden chances, etc.) that showed their ugly faces countless times today. Bounce back Monday! EXPECT to win...and do the things necessary to GET the win!

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after a hard-fought 1-1 tie vs. a quality Zeeland East team. Girls, I meant what I said after the game when I stated that I want you to be proud of today's effort but that we NEED to get more GREEDY at this point and expect wins, no matter the opponent. Zeeland East was ripe for an upset today and we didn't capitalize when we could have. We need to NOT be satisfied with that. Again though, be proud...but WANT MORE! Allegan is next....

Emily's COMMUNICATION Quotation...

Cervantes: Communication Quote
"That which we are capable of feeling, we are capable of saying."

-Emily comments: "I think that this quote can be applied to our team and how we communicate. we need to make sure we communicate through the way we are feeling, but also to not let our emotions overtake our communication. good job tonight ladies!"

Girls, please respond no later than this Friday by 730 AM!

Monday, April 20, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...following today's 4-0 loss to a talented, tough Unity squad. Girls, be proud of the overall composure and resiliency (especially Frannie and Morgan in net) you all showed today against a very good team but NEVER be satisfied with the result. We can still improve in so many areas: possession, disciplined with 1 v. 1 defense, COMMUNICATION, etc. The journey continues on Wednesday vs. Zeeland East, another very good team! Be ready.

Friday, April 17, 2009

Coach's Corner...

Girls, you should be proud of the overall effort today after a hard-fought 1-0 win. I told you before the game that we would WIN if we had 100 % concentration for the duration of the match, especially concerning lateral movement of the ball and not "jumping in". The lateral movement was MUCH improved, creating many dangerous scoring chances while going to space. The "jumping in" we can still work on a bit, but it was a pretty good effort. The result (with a few key players out and/or hobbled?)? A gutsy win. Nice job, ladies. Enjoy the weekend, but be ready for a VERY TOUGH Unity squad on Monday.

Monica's Quotation...

How you respond to the challenge in the second half will determine what
you become after the game, whether you are a winner or a loser.
-Lou Holtz

Every team member should respond to this quotation by 730 AM on Tuesday morning with her comments regarding how this quotation can be applied to the team...or one may reply to a teammate's comment.

Practice on Tuesday, April 21

Just a heads-up, girls and parents. Practice on Tuesday will end at 4 PM due to Parent/Teacher Conferences that evening. Conferences run from 430-9 PM that night.

PICS...

...check out the new additions to the "photos" page. Thanks, Rae (and fam)!

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after the Zeeland West contest, a 1-0 defeat. At the beginning of the week, we highlighted the quotation "99% concentration leads to 100% failure". Although the game certainly wasn't a "failure" per say, I really think we were at that 99% level. In other words, we played pretty well and the determination was there, but a few mental lapses (missed offensive chances, jumping in on defense, etc.) cost us the game. So all in all, the concentration/focus piece is still a work in progress. Let's take care of Allendale now (again)!

Monday, April 13, 2009

Frannie's "CONCENTRATION" Quotation...

"Success in any endeavor requires single-minded attention to detail and total concentration."
-Willie Sutton

Everyone should leave at least one comment by midnight on Wednesday regarding the quotation itself and how it can be interpreted/applied to our team and/or regarding a comment by another teammate on this post. BE SPECIFIC with your point!

Team night (Thursday, April 23)...

Allendale (fri.) update...

...the game at Allendale this Friday, April 17 is at the MIDDLE SCHOOL soccer field and NOT the high school field.

Saturday, April 11, 2009

Welcome back...

...to reality! I hope you all had a good break, girls. More importantly, I hope you're ready to get back in the swing of things and jump right back into academics and soccer. A few things at this point:

1.) First and foremost, make sure your grades/assignments/homework are in order. There will be a "grade check" for you girls in the near future.

2.) For practice on Monday, April 13, we will meet INSIDE my room initially by 3 P.M. Be dressed and ready to go for outside practice after a brief meeting.

3.) Our NEXT GAME is on Wednesday, April 15 vs. Zeeland West at home (4 P.M.) Ball girls, be aware.

4.) Please look over that sheet with SET PLAYS (corner kicks, direct kicks, etc.) that I gave you earlier in order to refresh your memory. I might ask you about certain specifics in practice...hint hint.

5.) A few of you have yet to comment on Kaitlyn's previous post from before break regarding self-control. You still need to do that, and we will address the "lateness" in practice in the near future.

6.) Remind yourself of "CHAIN"!

7.) I'm looking forward to seeing you girls and getting back together as a team. We've still got a lot of work to do, and let's remember what's brought us success thus far in the season: CONFIDENCE, TEAM COHESION, and SELF-CONTROL.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Food for Thought...

On the brink of Spring Break, I leave you girls with some "words of the wise" (a.k.a. thoughts from my dad that he sent me recently from afar). We can all certainly apply this to so many aspects of our lives, not just on the soccer field. Here goes:

A SHORT COURSE IN HUMAN RELATIONS
The six most important words: I admit that I was wrong.
The five most important words: You did a great job.
The four most important words: What do you think?
The three most important words: Could you please.......
The two most important words: Thank you.
The most important word: We
The least important word: I

Self-Control

Control yourself in everything you do: emotions, communication, nutrition, preparation, fitness, academics, etc. Find a "relaxed readiness" at all times, no matter the situation. YOU are the only one who has control of you; what an EMPOWERING idea!

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Coach's Corner...

Girls, we should be PROUD of our second half effort today and a bit disappointed in the way we started the game, especially considering our success this past weekend...we seemed very flat. Nonetheless, it's positive that we ended on a good note. For me, Shelby Reaume was a standout today in that she easily had the most touches in the game (perhaps due to her ACTIVITY throughout the game?), won a TON of loose balls, and scored a nice goal! She can certainly be a "model" of self-control and positive play for all of us as we move forward.

Kaitlyn's "Self-Control" Quotation...

To enjoy freedom we have to control ourselves.
-Virginia Woolf

Everyone should leave at least one comment by midnight on Wednesday regarding the quotation itself and how it can be interpreted/applied to our team and/or regarding a comment by another teammate on this post.

GO STATE!

We're goin' to the Final Four, baby! :)

Practice on Monday...

...girls, please meet in my room by 3 PM tomorrow (Monday) for the beginning of practice. Also, please be prepared for indoor (flat shoes, etc.) AND outdoor practice, weather permitting.

Saturday, March 28, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...2009 Coopersville Invitational CHAMPS! GREAT job of true teamwork and hard work today, girls! Especially impressive is that we didn't even allow a goal today...2-0, 2-0...a great TEAM effort. Check out the "JV results link" to get a recap of both games. Way to go, Hawks, and keep up the good work! Next is Middleville on Tuesday....let's not let up!

Friday, March 27, 2009

Kassi's "Team Cohesion" Quotation...

"As a team, we accomplish the impossible because no one cares who gets the credit."
-Author Unknown

Tournament Uniforms...

Girls, please remember to bring BOTH uniforms this sat., march 28. We will wear GOLD for the first game, and the second game depends on the outcome of the first game.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Congrats...

...to our recent rotating team captain for the tournament this Saturday, Jessica Kimber. She's deserving for being FEARLESS as of late and for being ACCOUNTABLE and RESPONSIBLE for her grades. Keep up the good work, Jessica!

CHAIN.....

I...Impossible if you
N...Never give up

Team cohesion is key! Let's get to the "performing" step of the team cycle ASAP, girls!

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Coach's Corner...

...after today's result. Girls, stay confident and together! A 2-1 loss isn't something to be ashamed of...even if we deserved a better fate. The first match of the season can always lead to some rocky circumstances, and i'm proud for the most part of your positive spirit and hard work throughout.

A few highlights for me: Raelyn's ability to create chances on O (maybe be a little more selfish around the net, Rae!)...Jessica's hard-nosed, no-nonsense play...Brandi's "garbage goal" after Kaitlyn's effort to keep the initial play alive...and both Lizs' support and encouragement of the team, especially from the sideline.

We've still got MUCH work to do though, girls. Be ready to get back to work tomorrow for practice!

Shelby's "Team Cohesion" Quotation

Coming together is a beginning
Keeping together is progress
Working together is success.
-Henry Ford

Girls, don't be alarmed if you don't see me in school on Monday...planned absence. Kalina, if you need to borrow a jersey (like we talked about), just go to my room, look under the long table/shelf towards the back corner of the room, and take any gold jersey out of that gray bin that you want for school on Tuesday. Just be sure to return it!

We'll meet for practice OUTSIDE at 3 PM...VERY important practice since it's our last practice before our first game. We'll run through our official game warm-up and (among other things) scrimmage with girls in predicted game positions. Make sure you look over our "set play" sheet that was handed out on Friday!

See you soon, girls. Enjoy the weekend...GO STATE!

CONFIDENCE Part 2...

Monday, March 16, 2009

As long as you are constantly doing something to improve yourself DAILY on the field and off, you're golden. Celebrate even the small successes! Another good training session today...don't let the focus wane, though...even with the simple drills...everything at game speed...play fast and be confident!
